So What Happens When There Is a .ABC? Disney Applied For It & Its Coming

WEDNESDAY,19 AUGUST 2015 The Domains
According to the news from Domain.cn on August 19th,after announcing it selected the domain name abc.xyz for its holding company Alphabet, Google has been going around buying all sorts of “abc” domain names.

Last week we told you that Google bought ABC.Global.

Onlinedomain.com spotted 78 new gTLD’s that Google registered using “abc.

Last night .Club registry announced on Twitter that Google bought ABC.club.

Also last night Onlinedomain.com spotted 8 more new gTLD’s that Google bought or registered starting with “abc”

Which bring us to the fact that Disney,  which owns the American Broadcasting Company otherwise known in the United States as ABC Network applied for the new gTLD .abc.

The application for .ABC passed ICANN evaluation and is in contracting so it will be a while until .ABC is live but it’s coming

Unlike .xyz which is open to be registered by anyone in the world on a first come, first served basis, .ABC is a Brand new gTLD, so the public will not be allowed to register .abc domain names unless Disney allows it, which according to its application they do not plan to allow.

At some point we can only assume we will not only have an abc.xyz but a xyz.abc

Yeah that won’t be confusing at all

While Google will control abc.xyz, Disney will control xyz.abc as well as abc.abc for that matter.

That might be a problem for Google, unless Google goes ahead and buys Disney.

Here is what Disney had to say in their application to operate .ABC:

“Disney Enterprises, Inc. (“DEI”) is applying for the .ABC global top level domain (“gTLD”). DEI will act as the Registry Operator, and outsource Registry Services to Verisign, Inc.

DEI will operate a closed gTLD, meaning it will always be the Registrant and not open to third parties to register second level domains.

DEI is 100% wholly owned by The Walt Disney Company (“Disney”).

The ABC branded vision is to “super-serve fans with compelling storytelling, digital and social experiences that connect them with entertainment, news and information they love and desire anytime, anywhere.” Acquiring and operating a .ABC gTLD is consistent with and supportive of that vision.”

“The .ABC gTLD may become a valued destination point for Disney Enterprises, Inc. (“DEI”) content viewing, acquisition and distribution.

It provides a fully branded string that will be easy to remember, shortened for simple sharing across social media platforms, and have immediate brand awareness in global markets where DEI provides content. With the massive changes in technology and content distribution⁄consumption, the ABC brand has the potential to extend globally, breaking the bounds of just the common terrestrial broadcasting, cable and satellite offerings in the US market. Now anyone in the world can download ABC branded apps on their iPads, iPhones and other mobile devices, and consume ABC branded content. Although it is unknown how the mobile⁄computer⁄”TV” viewing model will evolve, the company believes a crucial component of marketing and consuming ABC branded content will continue to involve and be built upon internet models and protocols.

As a part of the implementation strategy, it is critically important that DEI maintains control of the brand. To that end, the company plans to implement a closed gTLD. Registration requirements will dictate that DEI must be the registrant for all domains in the gTLD to ensure there is control around which second level domains are created. The domains will follow explicit business plans and strategies, and will be intentionally created, monitored for performance against the strategy, and reviewed for new potential business opportunities.”

Sorry Google The .XYZ Registry is Not For Sale

The CEO of the .XYZ registry Daniel Negari was quoted by Reuters that his company is not for sale.

“I believe I was put on the earth to do .xyz, and to bring it to the market.

“My work is nowhere near done”

Yahoo! Inc. Sells 2 Letter Domain Name AV.com

MONDAY,17 AUGUST 2015 The Domains
According to the news from Domain.cn on August 17th,Yahoo! Inc. has sold the premium 2 letter domain name AV.com according to whois records. The domain name has transferred to domain name registrar eName.

yahoonew

Also according to whois records, the buyer is a Jack Shen from Shanghai China.

This isn’t the first time that Yahoo! has offered AV.com, as they listed the domain for sale on Sedo.com in 2013 but the domain name did not sell at that time when it had a reserve price range of $1,000,00-$1,499,999.

Yahoo! did sell Sandwich.com for $137K and several more domains in the five figure range at that time.

2 letter .com domain names as of late are selling with a minimum wholesale north of $500,000 and many have been selling in the 7 figure range when the sales price has been reported.We.com, which TheDomains broke the news on selling, is being reported that it sold for $8 Million. So the market has changed a lot since 2013 on the mainly “short” domain market due to high demand in the Chinese market and Yahoo was asking $1 Million or more then….

Yahoo! Inc. owns over 25,000 domain names.

Dating back to 2001, the oldest whois history record for AV.com and the domain was owned and used by AltaVista. By March 4, 2004 Yahoo! first appears in whois records. Overture purchased AltaVista and Yahoo purchased Overture, so that is how Yahoo! took ownership of the domain name.

Steve Kaziyev of City Partners and Your Brand Discusses .NYC Purchases.

FRIDAY,17 AUGUST 2015 The Domains
According to the news from Domain.cn on August 17th, Steven Kaziyev is a New York based domain investor who operates sites at CityPartners.com,YourBrand.com, and DomainCrunch.com (I do write at Domain Crunch). Steve recently won the auction for the 112 domain portfolio of .NYC domains on Flippa. The auction closed at $3,780 and you can see a list of the domains here.

Steve told me he was really interested in about 30 of the names on the list, he currently holds closes to 500 .NYC domains. A name like MensWatches.nyc he said was one of interest. He said he had a relative who knows that business and that a lot of tourists are interested in jewelry from a NYC jeweler.

“The good names on the list justified the purchase price of the entire 112 domain portfolio.”

He has put some of the names up on YourBrand.com which is a brandable boutique like BrandBucket, only this is not open to other sellers. So far he has a couple prospects interested but no sales as of yet. It will be interesting to see if a new gtld can gain any transaction using the brandable model with the logo and description.

Autobytel Buys Dealix, Owner Of UsedCars.com In $25 Million Deal

FRIDAY,14 AUGUST 2015 The Domains
According to the news from Domain.cn on August 14th,Publicly traded Autobytel Inc. (Nasdaq: ABTL) has acquired Dealix, owner of UsedCars.com for $25 Million in an all cash deal.

The registrant for the domain name UsedCars.com was CDK Global, LLC and they are a wholly-owned subsidiaries of Dealix. The transaction took place May 21, 2015 according to a press release by Autobytel.

Autobytel-com

Autobytel is no stranger to premium generic domain names as they also own Car.com.

From the press release:

Dealix provides new and used car leads to dealerships, dealer groups, and automotive manufacturers, and consistently ranks as a top auto sales lead provider in the industry. The company is also the operator of the highly successful car buying site, UsedCars.com – one of the first used car search engines to connect consumers with a nationwide inventory of quality used cars. This site now joins Autobytel’s consumer-facing family of websites, Autobytel.com and the soon to be re-launched Car.com.

The online market for used cars has really heated up lately with many startups jumping in. One of, if not the highest funded is Beepi.com which has reportedlyreceived at least $300 Million of funding. CrunchBase is stating $79 Million in 4 rounds. Beepi was founded April 1, 2013!

There are other startups like Shift.com, Tred.com, Carvana.com and Vroom.com. Vroom  has raised $54 Million and had $20 Million in sales in May with projected sales of $300 Million for 2015 according to this Fortune.com article.

Auto1 Group which was founded in 2012, has a $1 Billion valuation and is alsoinvolved in the used car market with heavy funding. Drivin is a Chicago based startupin the same market with $10 Million in funding.

I’m sure I missed several more, but you get my point. The used car market is getting a lot of $ put into it, and to note, the majority all riding along on some great domain names!

There is of course the new gTLD’s coming into the space as well with .Car, .Cars and .Auto launching in the Q4 of this year as a joint venture between Frank Schilling Uniregistry and Daniel Negari’s .XYZ.
