Over 6,500 .Website Domain Names Registered In The First 4 Hours Of Availability

1(1)According to the news from on September 16th,  we just received from Radix, the new gTLD .WEBSITE, that went into General Availability today has already surpassed 6,500 domains in the first 4 hours

“We have been confident about .website right from the start and these numbers just reinforce the potential the TLD holds.” said Sandeep Ramchandani, Radix business head. Registrars such as OpenSRS, 1Api, 101domain, Key-Systems had expressed their buy-in in the TLD from start by giving it top billing on their homepages even before GA launched.”

Radix also launched .Press and .Host today

“Radix’s second TLD .PRESS has had a great start with a versatile list of Pioneers., a global portal for journalists, is amongst the first few to acquire the extension as a Pioneer. The highly credible Online News Association (ONA) has also signed on as a Pioneer, in line with its belief to lead the fast-changing world of digital journalism. The adoption of, by the Ireland-based ICANN Accredited Registrar, BlackNight Solutions, holds testimony to the fact that a .press adds value to a company’s PR efforts, irrespective of the company’s core focus.

“While .press is succeeding as a cross market TLD, .HOST is, fast becoming the signature TLD of the global hosting community. The .host pioneer set includes elite global & regional hosting leaders, media affiliates and marketers. These have been instrumental in driving its popularity in the community. .host is known for its aggressive direct to consumer marketing campaigns, and those efforts have generated over thousands of pre-registration on its website.

“We’ve always believed in going the extra mile for our TLDs, be it our efforts in marketing or in developing partnerships.” said Ramchandani. “We have received a highly encouraging response so far and are confident that these extensions will feature amongst the most popular new gTLDs over the coming months.”, he adds.

Radix delays new TLD launches until tomorrow

According to the news from on September 16th, Pricing configuration issue delays launch of three top level domain names.

New top level domain name applicant Radix has delayed the launch of its first three domain names until tomorrow.

.Website, .Press and .Host will all launch tomorrow at noon EDT. They were scheduled to release at the same time today.

Sandeep Ramchandani, business head for Radix, told Domain Name Wire that there was a pricing configuration issue that some registrars ran into. Although the TLDs could have launched minutes later than planned, a number of registrars requested that the launch be delayed by a day.

Given that people (like me) judge registrars based on their ability to capture pre-ordered domains, this was probably a smart move.

Ramchandani said the pricing issue is not one that affects end users, such as the amount registrants pay for standard and premium-priced domains.

This gives me a bit more time to figure out how to pre-order domains

Wow: buys .Buy for $4.6 million, .Tech sells for $6.8 million

1(1) According to the news from on September 16th, paid $4.6 million to win rights to .buy top level domain name, but that wasn’t the most expensive TLD auction on Wednesday.

You might think new top level domain names aren’t meeting early expectations, but applicants still apparently value the opportunity very high.

ICANN held its second “auction of last resort” for new top level domain names today. Three contention sets were resolved at multi-million dollar prices.

Here are the results:

.Tech sold for $6,760,000 to Dot Tech LLC. I’ve heard of some private contention set auctions closing for about this price, but I suspect this is a record or close to it. Three bidders bid at least $6.2 million in the auction. (I’ve heard it’s not a record, but definitely toward the high end.)

DotTech beat out Google, Uniregistry, Nu Dot Co, Donuts and Minds + Machines.

.Buy sold for $4,588,888 to

Amazon beat Google, Donuts and Famous Four Media in the auction. PVT Registry did not participate. Only two bidders bid above $1.5 million.

.VIP sold for $3,000,888 to publicly traded Minds + Machines.

It beat Google, VIP Registry, Minds + Machines, Donuts, I-Registry and Vipspace Enterprises LLC. Three bidders were willing to pay at least $2.2 million in the auction.

Unlike with private contention set auctions, the losers in these auctions walk away with nothing, other than a small refund on their application fee.

New TLDs find their religion: .Church wins the day

1(1)According to the news from on September 16th, .Church was the top TLD launch yesterday.

Going into yesterday, I bet that .guide would be Donuts’ top domain name launch of the week. It’s a fairly generic domain that works with a number of second level domains, similar to .tips (which now has 30,000 registrations).

I should have known that word travels fast in the religious community.

.Church was the top domain yesterday, gaining 3,409 registrations in the zone file to end with 4,044.

.Guide wasn’t too far behind. It got 2,895 to end with 3,386.

.Life, which also has a number of uses, picked up 1,783 to hit 2,106.

The financial domain .loans only garnered 418 registrations to reach 632.

Rightside launched its .republican domain. It had a slow start similar to .democrat. It grew by only 343 domains to 389.

Radix was supposed to launch .website, .press and .host yesterday. It delayed the launch until today.

This domain was among at least four new TLDs sold to end users this past week at Sedo. The other sales were for under $1,000, but that’s not bad for domains registered less than a year ago.
